Is it really true that music helps soothe babies? The answer is absolutely, yes. Babies have been found to be extremely sensitive to music. Does music soothe you? Chances are that it does, and similarly it has the same effect on babies. There are certain sounds that have been proven to calm even fretful babies. Those sounds are soft sounds of nature, white noise, and music.
Don't wait for your baby to start fussing or crying. Use music to promote an atmosphere of calm peacefulness. It takes just a few minutes a day every day and soon baby will be looking forward to hearing the soothing music they have grown used to. It's much healthier for your baby's disposition and development to play soft music in the background than to have a TV always on. TV sounds can be jarring and scary. There is nothing complicated about introducing your baby to musice. You just play music on whatever music delivery system you have. There is no need to search for the perfect song or a certain type of music. Generally babies like classical music. Heavy rock, metal, vulgar rap isn't appropriate for babies. The funny thing is that the same music that helped plants grow better, in a famous experiment, seems to be what babies like. That means soft and soothing, uplifting, upbeat. More important than what you put on is to realize it will effect the baby's mood. Calm music means calm baby. Stimulating music means awake baby. If you are unsure , don't worry. There are hundreds of CDs on the market today with baby songs and lullabies. Many smart mothers have an "end of the day" lullaby they play as part of the good night ritual. Or, baby hears the same familiar quiet baby song CD while settling down to sleep. Young children get attached to songs, just like a favorite blanket of teddy bear. Children delight in hearing the same songs again and again.
While an adult may feel irritation at having to hear the same silly song ten times, babies are comforted and soothed by the repetition. You may notice that your baby seems happy when a certain song is playing. Try to play it if possible to soothe your baby when he needs soothing. Studies have shown that introducing music early to babies is associated with enhanced behaviour and cognitive skills. It also lessens stress for the whole family. In some cases, it can promote a lifetime interest in music.
